Chicago Tops List of 'Mustache-Friendly' Cities
A lot goes into deciding where to live: jobs, climate, social networks, etc. Add to this list of considerations a new metric: mustache-friendliness.
A new “white paper” released by the St. Louis-based American Mustache Institute (yes, this really exists) looks at what makes a city great for men with mustaches, and compiled a ranking of the top 10 cities for mustaches in the U.S.
Topping the list are Chicago, Houston and Pittsburgh.
The institute – “the world’s leading facial hair think tank and advocacy organization” – determined mustache-friendliness based on a number of lifestyle factors that would make cities more appealing to those seeking “a Mustached American lifestyle.” The amount of mustache-friendly employers and professions such as law enforcement and “actors who play law enforcement” is one of the key criteria. Transportation, as measured by the amount of motorcycles, monster trucks, and all terrain vehicles, is another, as is the concentration of restaurants “primarily serving Miller Lite” and “more than four Applebee’s casual dining restaurants.”
“Based on these criteria, AMI considered 100 U.S. municipalities through on-the-ground engagement, thousands of volumes of legal documents, relevant statistics, and U.S. Census data to identify the cities deemed most appreciative and supportive of the sexually dynamic Mustached American lifestyle, as defined by AMI.”
Chicago, the number one city for those with mustaches, excels due to its high amount of first responders, its lake access, its two baseball teams, high hot dog consumption and “a heritage of retired Chicago Bears players who have continued to embrace a Mustached American lifestyle.”
Houston earned a second place ranking because of its history of ranching and its “high Mexican-American influence.”
The paper also concludes that mustached Americans are increasingly concentrating in metropolitan areas. Other major cities in the top ten include Detroit, Cleveland, and New York. While the results of this ranking are intended to encourage more mustache awareness, the institute cautions that choosing the right city for you and your mustache should be a highly individual debate.
