Postcard From Nagoya
Nagoya's sister city, Nanjing, has severed its sibling relationship after Nagoya's mayor said he doubted that the Japanese Army’s 1937 Nanjing Massacre actually took place. Mayor Takashi Kawamura told a visiting delegation of Chinese Communist Party officials that he was skeptical. In a statement, Kawamura said: "there are many opinions about the so-called Nanjing incident ... I have said I want to have a debate with people from Nanjing."
In other news:
- Afterschool, Japan's Spice Girl ska band, will perform in the city on their just-announced tour.
- A museum showcasing a state-of-the-art magnetically levitated train, shinkansen bullet trains and classical steam locomotives drew more than 1.09 million visitors last year, far outpacing expectations.
