What a Turn Toward Traditionalism Looks Like in Jakarta
In quickly modernizing Jakarta, there has been a quiet turn back toward traditional culture. One form of this revival is the "Wayang Orang" or "Human Theaters." The show harkens back to Indonesia's Hindu roots (traced to the ninth century) and involves over 100 dancers and musicians.
Only three troupes perform the Wayang Orang in Indonesia. This show takes place every Saturday night, and has drawn a slew of interest from young actors
