Goofy Sports Logo of the Day: Stevedore Steve and the 5 O'Clock Dock
If any city could use a civic rebranding, it's Stockton, California. The Central Valley city, population 291,707, made headlines in June when it became the largest American city to file for bankruptcy.
What better way to promote a city's identity than through a gnarly new baseball logo?
The Stockton Ports -- a single-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics -- released a hat Friday featuring a new character (above), whose name, according to the press release, is either "5 O'Clock Dock" or "Stevedore Steve."
This burly sailor, like the team's name, is a tribute to Stockton's status as California's biggest inland port. (Team slogan: The Fun Docks Here.) His asparagus bat represents another little-known element of Stockton's civic identity; it is the Asparagus Capital of the World.
It should be a hit with sailors and foodies alike.
