Shanghai's Hilarious New Take on the Giant Floating Duck
Dutch artist Florentjin Hofman's globe-trotting Rubber Duck arrived in Hong Kong to much fanfare earlier this summer, immediately inspiring copy-cat productions in other Chinese cities like Wuhan, Tianjin, and Shenzhen.

But in light of the recent heat wave in Shanghai, which saw 31 consecutive days with temperatures above 95°F and an unprecedented high of 105.4°, the city has taken the concept one step further: the Rubber Duck is now a cooked bird. With “crispy brown skin”, drumsticks, and a yellow papier mache head, a passenger ferry has been transformed into a roasted duck, a popular recipe in China.
Designer Han Baishi told AFP, “The design process took place during shanghai's scorching hot summer days, so we just thought: 'let's roast it'". The the boat will carry passengers around the Huangpu River for the next month, hosting cultural performances like poetry reading.
