Tree Houses for Grown-Ups, the Complete Collection
Birds' nests, bird houses, tree forts, tree towers: surely most every child has dreamed at some point of roosting in a private treetop aerie. Tree Houses, a gorgeous new book by Barcelona-based Loft Publications, chronicles 50 real-life constructions, most with a far more adult flair.
The book's 400-plus images offer up luxury homes, lookouts, hotel rooms, and play structures. They include a fabulous white "bird apartment" on a Japanese nature reserve (it has room for a human resident on one side and 78 bird nest spaces on the other):
A stainless-steel modern live/work pod in Berlin, perched in a willow tree near city center:
An old-fashioned wooden "fairytale castle" playhouse in the U.K., complete with rope bridge:
A magical "mirror cube" hotel room in Sweden:
And an intricate canopy walk in Philadelphia that showcases family-friendly nature experiences, with a tea-house and a hanging bird’s nest:
Happily, at least some of the lofty abodes in this book are rentable (like that mirror cube, which is part of Treehotel, in northern Sweden’s Lule River valley). Closer to home, you’ll find tree house rooms nestled among the redwoods at Big Sur’s iconic Post Ranch Inn; 50 feet up a Western red cedar near Mt. Rainier at Cedar Creek Treehouse; and in a secluded stand of tall pines at Treehouse Cottages — complete with heart-shaped Jacuzzi! — in the Ozarks.
