Announcing the AppMyCity! Prize
Whether it's real-time bus arrival information or a simple way to be a good citizen and report a broken fire hydrant, the combination of smart-phone technology and major gains in the open data movement are already leaving an indelible mark on how city dwellers live their lives. It's a topic we've covered extensively ever since The Atlantic Cities launched in 2011. So we're thrilled to announce that we've partnered with the New Cities Foundation to launch the 2013 AppMyCity! Prize, celebrating mobile applications that improve the urban experience, connect people, and make cities more fun, fair, vibrant, and sustainable places.
This is a contest that's open to enterprising app developers all over the world. Here's how it works:
Entries are now open at www.appmycity.org and the submission deadline is April 26, 2013. The rules are simple: Your app must be Urban (a clear city focus in categories such as mobility, sustainability, equity, citizenship, retail, art and entertainment, street food, health, water, or any other city-related topic), New (it must have launched after January 1, 2012 or if it's still in development, have a final release on a major platform planned for prior to May 1, 2013), and Mobile (it must be downloadable on an iOS, Android, or Windows Phone. Web-based mobile apps are also eligible. The app itself can be in any language).
Ten semi-finalists will be announced on April 30. This list will then be assessed by a panel of expert judges, who will select three finalists. The finalists will be announced on May 7.
The three AppMyCity! Prize finalists will be invited to attend the 2013 New Cities Summit in São Paulo, which runs from June 4-6. Each finalist will have the opportunity to present their project to an international audience of 1,000 urban leaders. The winner will be selected at the Summit and awarded $5,000 USD to support further development of the app (prize money made possible thanks to Google).
As the contest progresses we'll also feature the semi-finalists and finalists here on The Atlantic Cities.
